What Are SERPs? Understanding Search Engine Results Pages and Their Importance in SEO

So, what exactly are SERPs? To start, SERPs stands for Search Engine Results Pages—a crucial element of SEO. SERPs let us show clients how their website ranks and track changes in those rankings over time. Below, you’ll find an example of a SERPs report that we provide to our clients.

Report Breakdown -

Let’s break down the report. Remember, each agency has its own format, so reports might look a bit different, but the principles are the same.

At the top of the report, you’ll find essential details like:

  • Website domain name, report duration, and check frequency

  • Average position: If a keyword doesn’t have a rank, it assumes a rank of 200, which can raise the average rank.

  • Improved keywords: The number of keywords that have shown improvement over the reporting period.

  • Top 3: How many pages rank in the top 3 SERPs for the tracked keywords.

  • Top 10: How many pages rank in the top 10 SERPs.

  • Top 30: How many pages rank in the top 30 SERPs.

  • Top 100: How many pages rank in the top 100 SERPs.

Middle of the Report: The Bulk of the Information

In the middle section, you’ll find a detailed breakdown of each keyword we’re tracking for the client. Keywords can be long-tail or short-tail (learn more about long-tail keywords here]). Here’s what each term in this section means:

  • Change: Shows how many positions the webpage has moved up or down for each keyword. Pages fluctuate, so don’t be discouraged if rankings dip slightly.

  • Current: The current position of the page for each keyword, as of the report's last update.

  • Earliest: The position of the page for that keyword at the beginning of the report period, typically the 1st of the month.

  • L-Vol (Location Search Volume): Shows the search volume in a specific location, like England. If there’s a question mark, it means search volume data is still being processed.

As mentioned, each agency may present reports differently, but this layout provides a comprehensive look at our performance for you, the client. If your agency isn’t sharing a SERP report with you, it’s a good idea to ask for one. If they can’t produce it, well...

What SERPs Software Should I Use?

Looking to track your own rankings? There are plenty of options out there. If you’re not too concerned with precise rankings, you may not need a tool. But if you are, one we recommend is SERPOBOT. We’ve used it for several years and found it highly reliable. They offer a free SERP checker for a limited number of keywords, or you can create an account and purchase a SERP Bot to check around 50 keywords daily for a fee.
